McDonald's Hong Kong director of corporate communications and relations Helen Cheung Yuen-ling said, "Over the past two years, we've started receiving calls from people who want to have a wedding party in our restaurants. There are about 10 calls a month. People said they'd dated here, or met here, and wanted to get married here ... We see this as a business chance."
In the past, several fast food giants have catered to individual weddings. Burger King and Taco Bell are popular names that come to mind. Along with this, there is a small following of self-towered wedding cakes that are made with Krispy Kreme donuts. McDonald's Hong Kong will be the world's first player to dynamically promote wedding services and cakes. The company has a list of ideas to encourage such services; they believe this could be a massive success as the demand is increasing.
To be termed ‘McWedding’, these would cost about HK$ 2000-3000 (€185-278) and comprise of a set menu. There is even a possibility for guests to place orders during the event – they could pick a cake and gifts as well. Keeping in line with traditions, French fries will be replaced with the customary cherries "for the newlyweds to eat together and kiss." Wedding toasts will be alcohol-free.
